SCRAMBLER > Hannah Gorman
BACK TO SCRAMBLERS
Proud to welcome our first female Scrambler on board, Hannah Gorman! Hannah exploded onto the competition scene in 2010 and hasn't stopped winning since then.
In her own words, May 2011 (since writing this, she got her blue belt!)
I began training in September 2009 under Italo Ferreira with Darren Yeoman at Fightworx Academy in Torquay. I was strongly persuaded into BJJ by Darren, as what I really wanted to train in was MMA. He convinced me that I needed some ground knowledge if I were to be any good. After my first session, I was hooked. I’ve dabbled in MMA since, but found my love in jiu jitsu.
I left Fightworx in September 2010 to train to be a teacher in Plymouth. I now train under Braulio Estima with Tom Barlow at Gracie Barra Plymouth. Both Darren and Tom are amazing coaches, and I’m very lucky to have trained under 2 people whose infectious love for Jiu jitsu has spread to me! They have both pushed me to get the most out of my training, for which I owe them a lot.
I travelled to Miami to train at Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu’s gym for a month last year. The training was hard, 4 hours a day, 6 days a week with mainly brown and black belts. I trained with world champions every day. It was like a dream. I was welcomed to Fightsports like a member of the family. It really upped my game and I loved it so much that I’m heading back out there for July and August this year!
My main goal this year was to win the British Open. My next goal is to compete in a nogi tournament, and just to stay actively competing all year. I want to continue getting better and training harder. Jiu jitsu has become my healthy obsession. Next year I am saving up to compete in the Mundials. I would love to be one of very few UK women to win gold in such a massive event.
The female BJJ community is growing fast, and ultimately, I’d like to be considered one of the top UK girls in BJJ. I’m training hard to make this a reality.
I have got gold in every competition I have entered, and only lost one fight (due to a refs decision). In 13 fights, I’ve had a total of 2 points scored against me.
