[VIDEO] England used to be awesome at wrestling. Plus, cool videos.

by Matt - Scramble ~ posted August 30th, 2012

Stuck in a YouTube hole, I found myself stumbling across some fantastic old catch wrestling videos, which makes a change from the kind of video I usually end up watching. Did you know Bjork’s stalker’s suicide video is on there? Scary stuff.

Anyway, I found this video of Billy Robinson and Billy Riley, two legenday wrestlers from the north of England. I couldn’t help but get nostalgic – I’ve never been to Wigan but I imagine there are not many strapping young lads practising wrestling in the fields anymore. Unless you count drinking cheap cider and snorting legal highs as wrestling. Which I don’t.

I truly think it is a shame that there are no more coaches like Billy Robinson, no passion for catch wrestling left in the UK. I am sure there are some great coaches still around – if you know any, let me know. But it just seems a shame to me that England could produce such a talented group, that spread catch wrestling around the world (Sakuraba learnt a lot from Robinson), and then for it to fade away so rapidly.

While I was getting nostalgic for wrestling, I was reminded of Josh Barnett’s fight at the last Dream NYE – a really nice example of the terrible beauty of real pro-wrestling. Fast transitions, nasty submissions, and athleticism.

And then, for good measure, enjoy the greatest tag team match I’ve ever seen – a “scripted” pro-wrestling bout that turns very, very nasty. But Sakuraba doesn’t mind, he’s got a mean streak too…

[VIDEO] Powerful Lower Body Training

by William Wayland ~ posted August 28th, 2012

This is an ongoing series of articles from guest blogger and Strength & Conditioning coach William Wayland of Powering Through. If you have any questions about this post or S & C in general as it relates to MMA and BJJ then please leave a comment below!

I went away last week, stepping out my door with my trusty scramble cap and a bag full of chalk, I travelled to deepest darkest Surrey to film a short piece with the guys at FXDMTV on my own training, in the video I guide you through my warm-up and a lower body training session. Through out the session I answer questions on a number of training topics. My approach is similar to the way I train the athletes I work with, involving explosive, strength, grip and core work. A lot of sweat was shed and I even bled a little. As a bonus we also recorded a series of lower body exercise variations range from beginner to more technical.

Lower body variations video, Zombie Squats anyone?

[VIDEO] BJJ Gi Collector in Japan with over 300 gis

by Matt - Scramble ~ posted August 16th, 2012

Do you know Jiu Jitsu Priest? If you’re a BJJ nerd, you really should.

Kinya Hashimoto from Japan produces hour-long shows packed with loads of awesome jiu jitsu content – interviews, fights, techniques etc. It’s all in Japanese but that’s fine because I speak Japanese so there.

Even if you don’t, your eyeballs still work don’t they?!

In the latest instalment, Kinya visits Osaka to talk to a guy who seems to have the biggest collection of gis anywhere.

And lo and behold, one of the first gis that gets pulled out is the Scramble Ichiban! There’s plenty of other interesting stuff in there too.

Skip to around 6:50 for some Ichiban action!

[VIDEO] Steven Seagal: From Russia with Mumbles

by Matt - Scramble ~ posted August 16th, 2012

Wow, this is a really great Steven Seagal video.

Of course, any video with Seagal in it is great, especially this one.

But this one is very special.

Things to note:

1) Interviewer is superimposed after the fact

2) Seagal states he was sent to Japan as a very young boy and brought up in the dojos of Japan. (Note: He was brought up in Michigan.)

3) Seagal also states that he was brought up in the deep south somewhere learning to play the blues from his best friend BB King. Amazing that he can be brought up in two places at once!

4) He will teach “secret stuff” to “high bodyguards” in Moscow. Welcome to Crazy Egomaniac Town, population: SEAGAL!

5) Seagal can apparently now add Russian to his list of ethnic backgrounds. (Note: at various times Seagal can appear to be black, Italian, native American, Japanese or Chinese.)

Enjoy!

Too Much Awesome – Oli Geddes update

by Matt - Scramble ~ posted August 7th, 2012

OK, I come into the office this morning and I see a new instructional video from Oli Geddes.

He’s been churning them out on his YouTube channel (which you should subscribe to) as he travels North America.

I watch it and it’s pretty good – he’s using the sitting / hook guard thing that I have been using lately, but turning it into overhook X guard / Lagarto guard, and then going for a footlock. I often get stuck trying to sweep from there so I decide to try it next time I train.

Then I checked out facebook to see Oli had shared a link to Graciemag, where he got great coverage of his fights from the Toronoto open. He got beaten by a guy in the weight finals, then beat him in the open weight.

So I watch the match, and he busts out the exact move I’d just seen him instructionalising. Superb.

Here’s the instructional:

Bondarchuk Complex

by William Wayland ~ posted August 6th, 2012

This is an ongoing series of articles from guest blogger and Strength & Conditioning coach William Wayland of Powering Through. If you have any questions about this post or S & C in general as it relates to MMA and BJJ then please leave a comment below!

Some people like their programs simple and straightforwards, this is understandable especially for beginners, who often desire a no mess no fuss approach to planning workouts. But don’t however get caught in the trap of doing “whatever” – it helps to have a structure to your training. Therefore I give you the Bondarchuk complex.

Named after the Olympian athlete and Russian throwing coach. Dr. Bondarchuk is renowned in throwing circles for being 1972 Olympic and European Champion in the hammer throw as well as a former World Record Holder. He developed the USSR National Team throws program from 1976 to 1992. It’s his coaching the modern strength and conditioning communityknow him for.

The Complex offers straightforwards planning for 2 or 3 day strength and conditioning sessions, excellent for beginners and athletes looking to maintain and build general physical preparation. Works well in 3-4 weeks training blocks before rotating exercises. If we run this complex 2 or 3 days they will be different from each other, Monday might be deadlifts and Wednesday will be Squats for example. Program slots in with the idea of “big to small” in our training, biggest most neurologically demanding exercises are put first in our program.

Workout
Warn-up – Prehab, mobilise, foam roll etc
A) Total Body Explosive Movement      (Jumps, Bounds, Olympic lifts)
B) Lower Body Movement         (Squat, Deadlift, Single leg work)
C1) Upper Body Press        (Overhead press, Press-up, Bench press)
C2) Upper Body Pull        (Row variation, Pull-up variation)
D) Weak Area

Sample Day
A) Power clean 5 x 3-5 reps
B)Reverse Lunges 4 x 8-12 reps
C1) Overhead Press 4-5 x 6-12 reps
C2) Bent over row 4-5 x 6-12 reps
D) Band pull aparts/Band no moneys 3 x 8-12reps
Finish 3 x sprints

The whole workout should not take more than an hour. It works brilliantly well for small groups of athletes. Not set in stone however, the program is flexible and allows you to modify it depending on your needs. Always push for progressive overload, add a little more weight week to week cycle to cycle and really targeting exercises you need to get better at. Give it a try!
